Gabriel Bîrjovanu has returned to the country after two decades at the Oslo Opera, resuming collaboration with the Iași Opera. His decision to return surprised everyone, including his family.
About the Return
Bîrjovanu left for Oslo and found himself in a "whirlwind" of contracts and projects. He doesn't regret the choice made. Now, with enough seniority for retirement but without the legal age, he obtained study leave and is pursuing a doctorate at the Iași Conservatory.
"Returning home is a confirmation that I am still valid as an artist!"
Adapting to the Scandinavian Environment
Norway taught the artist rigor and discipline. Coming from a post-communist Romania, he adapted relatively easily to the Scandinavian professional environment, where only nine artists are permanently employed at the opera.
"I was privileged to work in a professional environment with important musicians."
"Die Fledermaus" Performance
The artist will debut on the Iași stage in the role of Gabriel von Eisenstein, a piece that generates maximum emotions, being the first reinterpretation on the home stage and in Romanian after 20 years.
"It's hard for people to understand what it means to be an opera singer."
